Apple’s Rising Class Leaders will shape a post-Tim Cook era
(Bloomberg) – Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook and his key executives are focusing on developing the next generation of leaders to run the most important divisions of the iPhone maker, such as hardware development, services and marketing. Holding the helm for his tenth year, his management group is made up of senior former presidents between the ages of 55 and 60, who have worked at Apple for more than two decades and made tens of thousands of dollars. Has changed. Experienced people said things that prompted California-based company Cupertino to grow its next class of top managers, along with typical corporate planning, were asked not to recognize domestic company negotiations. Apple declined to comment. Cook took over from Steve Jobs in August 2011, leading Apple to become the most valuable company in the world, with a market capitalization of $ 2 trillion in the US for the first time. With the company’s success, the next group of leaders will need to navigate the growing global antitrust concerns, establish strong relationships with app developers, reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing, and find tools or new services to take the company beyond the iPhone. The CEO has given no indication that he is ready to retire, but if 59-year-old Cook moves on tomorrow, look beyond Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, 57, to take over. Williams, who has been running the company’s global operations under Cook for the past several years, is seen as the heir apparent. In 2013, he undertook the development of the Apple Watch and Apple Health Initiatives, and last year added oversight to the hardware and software design. Read more: Apple’s heir apparently looks more like Tim Cook than Steve Jobs. In many ways, Williams is seen as as practical as Cook and as someone who does not allow the company to be defeated. He’s more of an operations – focused executive like Cook than a product viewer like Jobs or former design chief Johnny Ive. During the company’s successful decade under Cook, the board does not want to deviate from this proven formula. Bloomberg examines the successors of the current executives in charge of each major Apple division. Marketing: Greg Joswick, 56, took over as Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president in August, but people familiar with the transition say Schiller, 60, has been gradually handing over some responsibilities over the years. At Apple, product marketing organization is broader than advertising because it allows the group to choose which features to add to the devices and control product development. Josviak joined Apple in the 1980s, only three years older than his half-retired predecessor. The company has a list of Joswiak’s successors, and a person close to the company said that “smart money” will eventually take over 42-year-old Kian Drans, who has been newly appointed vice president of iPhone marketing. Other contestants are Stan Ng and Susan Prescott. NG, Vice President of Apple Watch Marketing, has been a key figure in Apple’s marketing organization since the late 1990s, moving from the Mac to the iPod, and then to the iPhone before the Watch. The 55-year-old Prescott oversees marketing for applications and enterprises. Software Engineering: Craig Federigi, 51, is the youngest member of Apple’s executive team and is likely to continue in his role for years to come. If he resigns, Federigi will have at least two key lieutenants. Sebastian Marino-Mess, Vice President of Intelligent Systems Experience, and John Andrews, who was elected Vice President in charge of Corios last year, are being looked at by people close to Apple who could be promoted if necessary. Andrews’ Chorus is the core component of most Apple operating systems, and the layer that handles basic features such as wireless networking and file systems. Marino-Mess played the role of Andrews but was moved in 2016 to oversee photos and camera applications in addition to system security. Recently, Marino-Mess has been replaced with newer iOS 14 widgets to work with such features. After running the software division of the Canadian-based company, Marino-Mess was hired by BlackBerry Limited in 2014, and Andrews joined Apple in 2006. Services: Services are one of Apple’s fastest growing segments and a major driver of device sales. AD Q, 55, was elected senior vice president of the unit in 2011. Cue, who has worked at Apple for over 30 years, started the company by managing customer service teams and now oversees Apple Music, Apple TV +, iCloud and Apple. Maps, many applications that work on the company’s devices and transact content. Peter Stern, 48, topped the shortlist for Q’s heir apparent. Stern, who joined Apple from Time Warner Cable in 2016, is a content dealer. He oversees the business aspects of Apple’s video efforts and works for Apple News, Apple Books, iCloud, and the company’s advertising platforms. He also helped manage the development of Apple’s updated TV app last year and led Apple’s advancement into service bundles. Functions: Apple’s operations are probably the company’s most important. The team is responsible for removing millions of devices from Asia and shipping them around the world. The group should also develop manufacturing techniques, source components and strike deals with suppliers. Cook handled Apple’s operations before handing over that responsibility to Williams. Sabi Khan, 54, was named Apple’s senior vice president last year. Beyond Khan, Apple has a team of several veterans, including operation executives Dan Roscos, Rob York and Rory Sexton. But according to people familiar with the group, Priya Balasubramaniam, the iPhone’s chief operating officer, may be the long – term successor. Balasubramaniam has been in his current role since 2014 and joined Apple about 20 years ago. She is responsible for the production, distribution network and repair network for Apple’s most important product and components. In 2017, Balasubramaniam helped solve developmental challenges with the iPhone X’s facial recognition sensor in South Korea. The phone stopped shipping during the holidays and led to wholesale sales. Hardware Engineering: Dan Riccio, 57, has been running Apple’s hardware engineering division since 2012 and oversees the hardware development of all Apple devices. The group has a number of vice presidents in various fields, but John Turns’ profile has grown steadily inside and outside the company. As Richie’s top lieutenant, Terns, 45, is in charge of hardware engineering for the iPad and Mac. He also contributes to the development of many other products. A person who knew Ternas called him a decent manager who understood technology, and despite his profile rising, it remains unclear – all the characteristics of a future division head or CEO. Terns recently oversaw the design of the new iPod Pro. , The company focused more on the Mac after several lines were exhausted and played a key role in the company’s transition from Intel Corporation to its own Mac processors. Hardware Technologies: Johnny Sauerjee’s Hardware Technologies Group has become one of Apple’s most important assets. His team’s chips outperform many rivals with the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The group is also developing Apple’s upcoming augmented-reality headset, glasses, cellular modems for future iPhones, and processors to replace Intel’s on the Max. The 55-year-old Survivor joined Apple in 2008 and was appointed to Apple’s executive team in 2015. He is a leader who strictly holds a team that is emerging in the chip industry. None of his direct reports appear to have influenced the surge to run such a demanding division. However, sources close to the company said that the 54-year-old Sreebalan’s son will play the role if Sreeji resigns or retires. When Santhanam, vice president of silicon engineering, joined Apple in 2008, he acquired his former employer, PA Semi, in 2008 to kickstart Apple’s in-hutch chip efforts. His profile went up after announcing the iPhone 11’s processor. It was one of the showmans of Apple’s Mac processor conversion. Retail & Human Resources: When Angela Ahrene was head of Apple’s retail last year, Tim Cook tried something new: a newcomer to the job. Cook’s first election as head of retail in 2012 saw John Browat come out and clash with a culture of customer service, which led to his resignation within a year. While AhreneDes has updated the look and feel of its stores, some employees and customers are not happy with the changes. If 54-year-old O’Brien Retail resigns as head of human resources, Apple will have a bench of lieutenants in charge. The company may consider re-dividing this role into two positions, such as having a human resources executive and promoting the retail leader of a major geography. As before, Apple can hire a foreigner. Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel, Machine Learning: One year before the retirement of former Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, Apple hired current CFO Luke Maistry (56) from Xerox Corporation. Served as Corporate Controller and Vice President of Finance. Before taking the CFO job. If Mastri leaves Apple, the company is likely to look for a foreigner to take over the job again. Sori Casey, the current vice president of finance, who oversees the company’s books and is responsible for compiling revenue reports, may consider this.
