Recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of justice for the Palestinian people“, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said alongside his Irish and Norwegian counterparts in Brussels on Monday 27 May.

The decision, which was announced last Wednesday in coordination with the Prime Ministers of these three countries, should come into effect on Tuesday, May 28.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will speak at 06:30 GMT before his government approves a decree on Spain's recognition of a Palestinian state.

The Irish government is also meeting in the morning, while Norway submitted a note to new Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa on Sunday, May 26, confirming that the decision took effect on Tuesday, May 28.

These three European countries – two of which are members of the EU (Spain and Ireland) – want to believe that their initiative has a strong symbolic significance and can bring other states along with them.

She highlights the role played by Norway and Spain in the Middle East peace process in the 1990s. The Madrid Israel-Arab Peace Conference was held in 1991, two years before the 1993 Oslo Accords.
