Southern Miss Athletic director Jeremy McLean announced on Monday that coach Jay Hopson, who played only one game in the 2020 college football season, has resigned. Co-offender coordinator Scotty Walden will take over as interim head coach for the Golden Eagles.
Before the 2016 season, Hopson took over the Southern Miss program. It has gone 28-23 overall in the last four plus seasons and 20-12 in the Conference USA game. He led the Golden Eagles to three bowling games but did not finish second in the C-USA West Division. He served as an assistant coach from 2001-03 to 2005-07.
“Coach Hopson came to me after last Thursday’s game to discuss what was on his mind. After much discussion over the weekend, he and I agreed that our football program needed new leadership, ”McLean said. “Coach Hopson has been part of our program for 10 years. I appreciate his commitment to Southern Miss, and I want nothing but the best for Jake and his family.”
