Rare Blue Moon Above This Halloween Laois – Astronomy Ireland Wants to see your photos

Published on

No full moon has been seen from Ireland since Halloween since 1974, and it will not happen again for two decades.

It is also known as the ‘Blue Moon’, the second full moon of a calendar month.

This is a very rare event and astronomical Ireland urges everyone to go out and look at the Spookist at night.

They also want to publish comments and photos in the Irish People’s Astronomy Ireland magazine on this rare occasion that has never happened before in the history of astronomy Ireland celebrating its 30th birthday this year.

“Even camera phones can take great photos of the moon these days, either in the background of buildings, statues or landscapes,” said David Moore, editor of the Irish magazine Astronomy.

Here are the details sent by Astronomy Ireland to its followers:

Saturday, October 31 at 3 pm Full Moon is a very rare event!

“First, it’s the first full moon to occur on Halloween since 1974 from Ireland. We will not see another full moon on Halloween until 2039.

“If that’s not enough, this is the second full moon in October, a rare event (two full moons in a calendar month) known as the blue moon.

“It’s even better that Saturday, the date of the distant faint planet Uranus opposing the Sun (and a full moon is effective when the Moon opposes the Sun), so Uranus is closest to the Moon that night.

“If Uranus was 3.8º above the moon that evening and you were close to +5.7 with a full moon, you probably wouldn’t even be able to see it with binoculars, certainly not with the naked eye.

“Still, it’s nice to know that Uranus exists to celebrate such a triple wami!”
