Prices and destabilization .. US-African meeting to enhance food security

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed strengthening the global level at a ministerial meeting in New York with senior officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Senegal. The ministry explained that shortages of fuel and fertilizers in many countries, as well as rapid rise in food prices, could destabilize vulnerable communities, increase hunger and malnutrition, increase migration and lead to severe economic collapse.

The U.S. Department of State notes that Working Days on Global Food Security is an integral part of the U.S. multidisciplinary strategy to mitigate the food security crisis through humanitarian assistance, multidisciplinary intervention, and increasing food production.

It aims to eradicate hunger and malnutrition and to build more sustainable, equitable and resistant food systems at home and abroad.

The United States has provided $ 2.3 billion in global humanitarian aid since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, particularly in countries plagued by rising food prices.

At a ministerial meeting in New York, Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken announced an additional $ 215 million in emergency food aid to Algeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya.

At the domestic level, the United States is making internal efforts to alleviate the global shortage of fertilizers by working to increase domestic production of fertilizers through a $ 500 million project from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In addition, through the Feed the Future program, the United States has announced more than $ 5 billion in food security and nutritional threats worldwide over the next five years, and has recently signed up on more than $ 4 billion in humanitarian aid. Law for Ukraine and its neighbors.

The State Department has announced that the United States is working to enhance immunity by building a holistic and balanced diet that empowers women, youth and disadvantaged communities to cope with the effects of climate change, conflict and disruptions in the supply chain.

The Group of Seven is collaborating to target the work of international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to mitigate food security challenges.
