Ireland will “definitely” recognize a Palestinian state by the end of May, Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin said on Wednesday.

We will recognize the Palestinian state before the end of the month“, the minister said.

Indeed, last March, the leaders of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta indicated their intention to recognize a Palestinian state in a joint statement.
In this sense, the EU diplomatic chief announced last week that Spain, Ireland and Slovenia are considering recognizing the state on May 21.

In addition, Ireland has long indicated that it is not opposed in principle to officially recognizing a Palestinian state if it helps bring peace to the Middle East.

The exact date is still not clear as we are still negotiating with some countries” Michael Martin explains. She “It will be clearer in the coming days but before the end of the month“, he added.

For his part, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited Dublin last month, where he held a joint press conference with the Irish head of government, Simon Harris.

We think that moment is approaching.” “We want to do this with as many other (countries) as possible to highlight the decision and send a strong message.“, said Simon Harris
