When the two met at the Vatican on Friday, US President Joe Biden scoffed that Pope Francis was the only Irish man he had ever drunk.
Pope Francis responded by saying that the whiskey came from Ireland during a merry exchange between the two leaders during the handing over of the gifts.
Presenting a commemorative coin to the Democrat pope, he said: “You are the most important peace fighter I have ever seen.”
This section includes a reference to Biden’s political district in Delaware and the military unit where his late son Beau served before he died of a brain tumor in 2015.
“Tradition is this – I’m kidding about it – next time I see you, if you don’t have it, buy some drinks,” Biden said as he introduced that part.
“I’m the only Irishman I ‘ve ever met, and I’m not drunk yet,” he said sarcastically, addressing the pope with an interpreter as the two leaders held hands.
“Because the Irish brought whiskey,” Pope Francis replied in Italian, and those present laughed at the exchange.
During his 2008 campaign, Biden never described himself as an alcoholic: “There are enough alcoholics in my family.”
