“It is an honor to be appointed coach of the Ireland national team,” Hallgrimsson said of his appointment. “Ireland is, of course, a proud footballing nation, consistently producing talented players and enjoying memorable moments at major international tournaments.”
Hallgrimsson, 57, has proven himself as a manager, managing Iceland and Jamaica. He was Iceland's co-head coach with Lars Lagerback from 2013, a period that included a quarter-final appearance at Euro 2016, before becoming Iceland's sole manager for two years until 2018, the year he led Iceland to their first World Cup. Cup, the island nation failed to advance to the group stage.
After a stint at Qatari club Al-Arabi, Hallgrimsson became Jamaica's coach in 2022, but announced his resignation earlier this month following the team's exit from the Copa America.
