Meta continues to take steps to flesh out its vision for the Metaverse, so it just made a major announcement. In particular, the company is changing its policy so that a Facebook account is no longer required to use its various VR headsets, as has been the case for several months.
Instead, Meta Accounts will be your key to the Metaverse. These new types of accounts will launch next month for new and existing MetaQuest users.
Therefore, those who still have an Oculus account will need to switch to the new Meta account system after January 1, 2023 to use their VR headset.
It’s worth mentioning that meta accounts are not social media profiles at this point. Instead, they are only used to connect to VR devices and control purchased content.
As for the social side, the company introduces Meta Horizon profiles. This will include a username, avatar, profile picture and other elements, your new identity in the metaverse era.
Oculus profiles will be automatically converted to Horizon profiles and all friends will be converted to followers, which will automatically follow your profile on your behalf. In fact, you will have the option to connect your Meta account with your Facebook and Instagram so that you can exchange messages with your friends in the VR version of Messenger.
