Personal Data: LAn Irish DPC is in operation Against Grok

The Irish privacy body, the Data Protection Commission (CPD), a complaint was filed in the High Court in early August 2024 against Twitter International Unlimited Company, the entity that manages the European operations of

The DPC alleges that X illegally collected personal information from European users to train Grok, xAI's artificial intelligence. According to the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), any data collection must obtain the express consent of users, which X did not respect. DPC is asking the Irish High Court to suspend or restrict this illegal collection.

Grok: A Controversial AI Sponsors

Grok, an artificial intelligence developed by xAI, uses data collected on X to improve itself and provide paid services to users on the platform. The synergy between X and xAI, owned by Elon Musk, raises concerns about the centralization of personal data and their commercial exploitation.

X users have the option to unsubscribe from this use of their data, but the DPC stresses that this option is insufficient and comes too late after the data has already been used.

Elon Musk broke the law again

DPC's lawsuits are just part of the challenges facing Elon Musk. Meanwhile, he has again launched legal action against OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, for alleged manipulation. The billionaire has also started cracking down on advertisers boycotting his platform amid an outbreak of violent and racist content since the takeover.

The DPC plans to bring the matter before the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) to strengthen the application of the GDPR at EU level. Potential sanctions for X could reach up to 4% of its global turnover, which could amount to hundreds of millions of euros.
