Drones record beltless drivers, talk on cell phones and make dangerous overtakes

The air system will be used on VOAK, the bloodiest road in the country. Hundreds of people are dying on this street.


The Free Press reports that drivers who talk on cell phones, passengers who do not wear belts and dangerous overtaking are some of the offenses that can be recorded by state – of – the – art drones flying at an altitude of 120 meters. Their range reaches 10 km, so they can record images from most VOAKs, reaching a length of 313 km.

The drones will be operated by traffic police officers who will be undergoing special training in the near future to get acquainted with the latest technology models arriving in Greece. At the same time, specialized business centers will be created in different parts of the road axis to handle and receive the image of drones.

The cost is expected to reach 4 million euros, which will be fully funded by accredited European programs. According to the article, after Crete, the road network between Patras and Pyrgos is expected to close. After all, these are the roads that have recorded the highest number of traffic accidents across the country in recent years.
