DJ Eric Morillo found dead in Florida

Police say the world-famous musician, known in 1993 as Hit I Like to Move It, was found Tuesday morning at a property in Miami Beach. He was 49 years old.

Local police said they received 911 calls to a property in Miami Beach at 10.42am on Tuesday. “Detectives are currently on the scene and are in the early stages of the investigation,” police said.

The veteran DJ’s death comes a month after a woman was arrested for sexually charging a battery. The incident took place in December 2019 at Morillo’s home in Miami Beach.

Born in New York, Morillo spent his childhood in Colombia before returning to the US, where he began his career. Released by Reel 2 Real, Morillo’s I Like to Move It was an international success and appeared in other media, particularly the Madagascar animated film franchise.

A three-time HJD DJ at the DJ Awards, Morillo won Best International DJ in 2002, 2006 and 2009.

Following his death, Jersey Shore star DJ Polly D paid tribute on social media. He tweeted: “Sad news. A true epic. Eric Morillo RIP. ”

Musician Yusuf said: “I can’t believe it. Only talked to him last week …. he was restless, perfect, but always surprised me and helped us go to the circus in the early days, we had so many wonderful times during our 20 years as friends. Sincerely and deeply. RIP Eric Morrillo. ”- P.A.
