Corona virus: How do Wales define ‘essential items’ that can be purchased in stores? UK News

The country on Friday ordered the closure of all shops selling non-essential items in Wales after entering a 17-day “firebreak” lockdown.

These measures mean that stores such as supermarkets and news agencies may be open but can only sell products that the government deems essential.

Some Welsh shoppers were confused by these steps – pointing out that a customer could not buy baby clothes at his local Tesco but would get a bottle of vodka.

Ministers have now released a new list of what you can (and cannot) buy during the lockdown.

What are the “essential items” that shops can sell?

The Welsh government has said it will not allow a store to sell products that have been ordered to close shops “to maintain a level playing field”.

Although it initially released a list, it has caused some anger among consumers, so supermarkets are allowed to sell on the latest list:

  • Food and drink
  • Products for the sale of food and beverages, as well as materials used primarily for the preparation and storage of food (kitchen foil, food bags, cling film) and basic products for the preparation and consumption of food and beverages
  • Home cleaning and maintenance products, including laundry and batteries, light bulbs and fuel
  • Toilets and cosmetics, including toilet rolls and sanitary ware
  • Pharmaceutical products
  • Baby products, including accessories, clothing and nappies
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Stationery and greeting cards
  • Supply of pet food and other pets
  • Products for the maintenance of bicycles and cars

The government says it needs to put in place a “sensible system” to allow consumers to “buy unavoidable items”.

We will continue to discuss with supermarkets in the coming days how to implement this in stores in Wales, ”a spokesman said.

Are closed shops allowed to deliver?

All services listed by the Government are entitled to continue to use their premises for delivery purposes, whether or not they have to be closed.

This means that they can use their premises to handle the sale, rent or distribution of goods or services.

What about clicking services and collecting?

The Welsh government said only shops that are allowed to open can click and collect services, and these services will only be available for items that are allowed to be sold in stores where possible.

The government acknowledges that some online services cannot distinguish between different categories of goods and in such cases not all clicks will be commensurate with the collection of services. Of people who personally attend stores.
