To be honest, I’m looking forward to iOS 14.2, because I’m looking forward to the hundreds of new emojis that come with it. It also has eight new wallpapers, the best new accessibility feature, battery charging optimization for airpods, intercom for homepod, and homepod mini. And more.
How to achieve this, what’s in it, what’s in previous updates, and then the full Apple changelog.
How to get it
It’s available for download on compatible iPhones with iPods 14.2 compatible. Compatibility for phones starts with the iPhone 6S, including the seventh-generation iPod Touch, including the first and current versions of the iPhone SE. For iPods, it’s good if you have any iPod Pro, iPod Air 2, third generation and the new fourth – gen iPod Air coming in October, the iPod mini 4 or newer iPad from the fifth generation.
Updating is easy: Launch the Settings app on the iPhone and select General and then Software Update. Select Download and Install, it will do heavy lifting and keep you up to date.
What’s in the update?
This is a big update. First of all, amazing emojis – you can read about them in detail here, but they include a beautiful dodo, a beautiful polar bear, don’t confuse me, and an impression that fascinates me. There is a ninja, a great detailed Russian doll, a juicy ninja and a shiny roller skate. Everything comes to you with this update.
The new wallpapers come with light and dark mode versions, support for the upcoming iPhone 12 leather sleeve, and improvements to the homepod and the new intercom feature on the upcoming Homepod Mini. If you have an original homepod, you can connect it to Apple TV 4K for stereo surround sound and Dolby Atmos audio. For these features, your homepod will automatically update after you have iOS 14.2 on your iPhone.
The accessibility function mentioned above is an improvement over the best magnifier application. This means it can detect nearby people and report their distance using the lidar sensor embedded in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is a real benefit for people with limited vision, and is useful at a time when social distance is important.
Now, for the first time, AirPods has optimized battery charging to help increase battery life. This means less time to fully charge your airpods. Headphones also have audio level notifications, so you know when the audio level can cause hearing loss. There are also new AirPlay controls for audio streaming.
The last new feature is the time-bound option of providing exposure notices to public health authorities without identifying statistics.
There are plenty, but also lots of solutions. If your applications are random in the home screen dock, you need to fix this. It may seem small but it makes it easy to accidentally launch the wrong application. If your camera viewfinder suggests you stand in a coal hole, it should be sorted by now. The lock screen keyboard should be more efficient for recognizing when entering your passcode. Fixed reminder issues, photo widgets, weather widget and voice memo issues. You should not see a black screen during Netflix playback (unless it is a pitch-dark scene). It looks like the Apple Watch app will not close when it is not intended to, and the workout, audio playback, and wireless charging issues are sorted out. Finally, exposure notifications are disabled when restoring the iPhone from iCloud Backup or transferring data to a newer iPhone using iPhone migration, which has now been fixed, Apple says.
Previous iOS 14 updates
iOS 14.1
It will be released on October 20, 2020, and will include stuff for the homepod as well as the next iOS update.
Other benefits include focusing on solutions and bug quizzes. For example, this means that there is now support for 10-bit HDR video playback, which applies to photos on the iPhone 8 and later. Fixed issues with smaller icons, folders, and widgets, as well as other home screen issues such as apps disappearing from folders when dragging widgets. Mail issues sorted, such as messages sent from the wrong nickname. Local information that does not work with incoming calls is now fixed. Screen redro problem with uninterrupted call overlap, unpacked songs and calculator app problem
There were two Apple Watch issues like the iPhone that did not recognize the case material in your timepiece.
iOS 14.0.1
This update, released on September 24th, fixes an issue with resetting the default browser and mail settings after restarting your iPhone, and fixes an issue that prevents camera previews from being displayed, especially the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone does not have an issue. Connect to wi-fi.
There was a problem sending emails to some providers and images not appearing in the news widget.
iOS 14
The first version of iOS 14 was released on September 16, 2020.
Added Home Screen Widgets – Smart app icons with changing info – Added compact designs by revealing an app gallery to help you sort where your apps are located on the home screen. This means that Siri will sit at the bottom of the screen instead of taking over completely, and incoming calls will be announced at the top of the screen.
The app clips are brand new. If you need something provided by an app but do not have time to download and register the entire app, set up an account, check your credentials, etc., app clips can help. They work well on things like a parking app, even when you are close to the meter and say less on time. Instead, you scan the QR code on the meter, or tap the NFC tag. Application Clips Downloads a portion of the application you need, and since you are logged in through Apple, the payment details are sorted. This will be amazing as more apps come in stream.
The messaging app is now more efficient, so you can now pin the conversations you want to easily find at the top of the list, with new Memo options and better layouts for replies.
Improved maps, like the Apple Watch, with cycle routes, routing for electric vehicles, edited guides for finding new restaurants, and more.
Translator is designed to make it easy to translate live conversations across 11 modes. You can even do it offline, which will save you data costs when you travel.
The weather app can also show you how much rain will fall in the next hour as well as advise on severe weather events.
New accessibility features include back tap, which allows you to adjust shortcuts while tapping on the back of the iPhone in a special way.
The AirPods Pro comes into play thanks to the extra features that appear on the earbuds when your iPhone switches to iOS 14. These include spatial audio, so uninterrupted device switching when you watch or say a movie. More details here.
