The chaplain, who is in his fifties, was attacked by a teenager outside the Galway barracks, police previously announced. He received “several stab wounds.”

He was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers subdued the teenager, whose age was not released, and arrested him at the scene and later taken him into custody, police said.

“One line of inquiry is to determine whether it is an attack Motivated by terrorism “, she said in a press release.

“The suspect remains in custody and is being questioned by police.”

“As of now, the incident is not believed to be part of a larger conspiracy,” she added.

Citing police sources, the Irish Times newspaper reports that a suspected Irishman has been radicalized on the internet. These sources believe that he will be angry at the presence of Irish forces in the Middle East.

Irish soldiers serve in United Nations peacekeeping missions, including in Lebanon.

Victim Paul Murphy thanked the public for their support in a Facebook post on Friday.

“My friends, I thank you for your prayers,” he wrote. “I am fine and I am waiting for an operation. Everything will be fine,” Chaplin added.
