The late winner of Ryan de Vries ‘Sligo Rovers’ European hopes were activated after a 1-0 win over Derry City at The Showground on Tuesday night.
De Vries scored in the 86th minute to give Rovers their first win in four games.
The hosts had little defense in the first moments of the game, and Adam Hummel’s free kick from the edge of the box was deflected wide, and Gary Buckley had to make a crucial clearance when goalkeeper Ed McGinty threw the ball. Seems harmless.
Ronan Koglan missed a swinging cross from Reagan Donnelon and fell perfectly to Jesse DeVorz, but the Mayo man dropped it well.
Sligo’s excellent defensive division from Ryan de Vries found the ball to Divers, who was forced to save former Finn Harpez from Peter Cherry, and the comeback fell well short, but Derry Net Minder’s foot got the Limerick man’s effort from three yards.
Substitute Steven Sligo worked his way into a dangerous position on the bottom left of a defensive mis-hap, but he pulled his attempt wide Wide Ed McGinty’s post and opened the scoring almost to the angel side.
In the second half, Rovers struggled to defend the Candidripe defense, but the visitors had to take the lead in the 79th minute when Ibrahim Mite’s ball weighed heavily on Figura, who somehow hit the post from five yards out.
Bit O’Reilly put pressure on Derry’s defense in the final stages of the game, finally breaking the deadlock in the 87th minute when Ryan de Vries headed Alex Cooper’s ball over the cherry and grabbed all three points for Sligo Rovers.
