Since the presidents met, Big Ten football is still active

Published on

The Big Ten presidents unveiled a comprehensive plan on Sunday to hold a fall football season, but a final decision is yet to come.

One person with direct knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the full Council of Presidents and Chancellors from all subcommittees of the Conference returned to the Competitive Task Force for more than 2 1/2 hours. The man spoke in a state of anonymity as Big Ten did not return to competition plans.

The person said the presidents and chancellors broke up the meeting without a vote and they did not plan to reconvene.

However, if they act fast, they can kick off Big Ten football as early as the weekend of October 17th.

The conference focused on the medical part of the presentation after the conference postponed its entire sports season to August 11 because of COVID-19 concerns and how to play football safely. The advent of the daily quick-response COVID-19 test was not available when university leaders decided to pull the plug on the season.

If the Big Ten can start by the end of October, the eight-game season and conference championship game are still possible by mid-December. That schedule could set the Big Ten teams to be part of the college football playoffs.
