The late Boyzone star Stephen Gaitley should set up a park on Sheriff Street in his childhood.

The Royal Canal Linear Park near Spencer Dock is named after the singer who died tragically in October 2009 at the age of just 33.

The resolution to name the park in Gaitley’s memory was passed unanimously by councilors Anthony Flynn and Christy Burke before the Central Area Committee of Dublin City Council.

Councilor Flynn took to social media to share the joy of naming the park after the city’s hero.

He said: “We live in a community and a city of complete legends. We must celebrate, encourage and encourage each and every one of them!”

The North Inner City representative also shared a video message from Stephen’s happy bandmate Keith Duffy, thanking councilors for putting forward the resolution.

He added: “Thanks to Dublin City Council for seeing that it’s appropriate to move forward with this idea. Congratulations.

“Congratulations to Stephen’s Mum Margaret Gatley. Congratulations to Stephen’s family, congratulations to everyone on Sheriff Street.

“The council deserves to honor a man of extraordinary and extraordinary ability from Sheriff Street who lost his life at a very young age, but will now be remembered forever in his hometown of Dublin, the honor of having a park named after him.

“From a close friend of his, his brothers, I’s honestly a little emotional, and I’m not going to lie.

“I’m glad his name will live on in Dublin forever. What a wonderful day.”

Fellow Boyzone member Ronan Keating also shared the joy of the news on Twitter.

He wrote: “Thank you very much. This is wonderful news.”
