Syracuse, NY – Chas Owens, son of former Syracuse University Great Billy Owens, joins the Orange basketball team.

The 6-foot-5 wing Owens spent time last year on the Scotland (PA) campus, in Chambersburg, PA

Prior to that, Owens was a senior in the 2018-19 season, averaging 11.4 points and 8.2 rebounds at Shipley.

Orence will be a newcomer to Syracuse this fall. He recently enrolled and took classes on Mondays.

He hopes to receive the final scholarship on the team’s 2020-21 list. If so, he will become the second son of a former SU player to receive a scholarship this season, joining junior guard Buddy Boheim, the son of SU head coach and former player Jim Boheim.

Billy Owens played at Syracuse from 1988 to 1991. In just three years, Owens has scored 1,840 points and 910 rebounds. It ranks twelfth on the SU’s career scoring list and ninth on rebounds.

As a junior, Owens averaged 23.3 points. This is the highest scoring average of any player during Jim Boehim’s 44 years as head coach of Syracuse. During the 1991 season, Owens averaged 11.6 rebounds. He was a contemporary All-American and was named Big East Player of the Year in 1991.

Elected third in the 1991 NBA Draft, he spent 10 years in the league.
