In Ireland, the Bloomsday Festival celebrates the legacy of author James Joyce.

From 11 to 16 June 2024, Dublin celebrates Bloomsday, one of the world's most remarkable literary traditions. This annual event honors UlyssesThe Irish writer's masterpiece James Joyce Set in Dublin on June 16, 1904, it marks the journey of its protagonist, Leopold Bloom.

A total immersion in Joyce's universe

Bloomsday Festival is a unique experience not only for fans of famous Irish author James Joyce but also for literary lovers and curios. Throughout the day, participants dress in Edwardian fashion as characters from the novel. So it was no surprise to see hundreds of straw boaters on the streets of Dublin that day, a fashionable and iconic hat worn by many other than Joyce at the time!

On this occasion, the James Joyce CentreThe Bloomsday Festival has been organized since 1994 and will host a number of events throughout the week including:

  • General readings : Passionate actors and volunteers will read extracts from “Ulysses” at various iconic sites in Dublin, immersing you directly into the world of the novel.
  • Literary walks : Participants can follow Leopold Bloom's journey with expert guides who provide historical and literary explanations at each location visited.
  • Dramatic reenactments : In period costumes, actors will recreate key scenes from the book, transporting the audience to Dublin in 1904.
  • Conferences and Debates : Academics, writers and Joyce experts will discuss the influence and different interpretations of “Ulysses”.
  • Cultural events : Art exhibitions, concerts, film screenings and other cultural events will enrich the programme, highlighting Joyce's influence on art.

James Joyce's modern epic “Ulysses” celebrates Bloomsday every June 16, the novel's main date. This festival is one of the most important in Dublin. During this event, the city that inspired Joyce is completely transformed and the unmissable places of Bloomsday: Sweeney's Chemist At Lincoln Place, The Glasnevin CemeteryTHE Davy Byrne's Pub In Duke Street, likewise James Joyce Martello Tower A sudden return to Sandycove, south of Dublin, in 1904.
