Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognize the state of Palestine

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 – 12:51

Madrid, Dublin and Oslo formally recognize the State of Palestine this Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the decision a “historic question of justice”.

The recognition of a Palestinian state announced last Wednesday by Mr Sanchez and his Irish and Norwegian counterparts will take effect from today.

In addition to the question of historical justice for the Palestinian people, the recognition of a Palestinian state is “essential” to achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced this Tuesday.

Spain's government on Tuesday approved a decree formally recognizing the Palestinian Authority during a council of ministers, government spokesman Pedro Sanchez announced.

The Irish government was also due to meet in the morning to approve it, while Norway issued a note on Sunday to new Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa confirming the decision had come into effect.

These three European countries – two of which, Spain and Ireland, are members of the EU – believe that their initiative has a very strong symbolic value and could lead other states to join them.

She highlights the role played by Norway and Spain in the Middle East peace process in the 1990s. Madrid hosted the Israel-Arab Peace Conference in 1991, two years before the 1993 Oslo Accords.
