Christmas Mars or many “falling” stars: what to observe in the sky in December?

Published on

December Here’s an overview of what happens in the night sky during the last month of the year. Check it out and don’t miss a thing…

December will bring some interesting phenomena to the night sky. One of them, for example, on the first day of December, the planet Mars is closest to Earth in the last two years.

So these days we can observe Mars as one of the brightest objects in the night sky. You can recognize it because it is orange in color compared to other stars.

A rare mystery of Mars

However, we still remain on Mars. On Thursday, December 8, a full moon will see a rare eclipse of Mars. Incidentally, the full moon will also appear in the same places in the sky.

Mars will be covered by our Moon. This will happen around 6:05 am. And at 7:00 am Mars looks from behind the Moon.

Meteors can literally rain down

Another spectacular sight in the night sky will be the very rich Geminid meteor shower, which at its peak will bring more than 120 meteors per hour. “Falling” stars will literally rain in the night sky.

The Geminids reach their maximum activity on December 14th. The interesting thing about this cluster is that its meteors are greenish in color. They seem to come from Gemini.

Finally, a Christmas hexagon

The imaginary icing on the cake is that at the end of the year, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, all 5 visible planets of the solar system can be seen in the evening sky along with the Moon, which will be arranged in a Christmas. hexagon

So, in December, there is definitely something to look forward to, and if you observe some of the following cosmic phenomena, we will be grateful for your photos.
