Opening win for U17 Women’s National Team (2006)!

The Austrians celebrated their 1-0 victory over Ireland in the first match of the qualifying round for the European Championship in Belfast. After a scoreless first half, Sarah Gutman scored the winning goal in the 58th minute.

“It was definitely a hard-earned but well-deserved win. We had to invest a lot,” says ÖFB team boss Patrick Heidbauer.

Both teams had strong and weak phases in the opening minutes. It wasn’t until half an hour later that the Austrians took control of the game. Jasmine Reiterer’s best chance to take the lead was a cross-bar shot before the break.

This decision was made by Lena Breznik, who came in as a substitute. However, her goal was disallowed due to an offside position. After that, the Austrians took a slight lead over time. In the second half, the Irish, who were only dangerous from set pieces, could not make up for that deficit.

The team boss is naturally pleased with the opening win. “It’s an important three points for the rest of the tournament as Ireland are strong opponents and will cause problems for other teams.”

Hosts Northern Ireland await in the second group game on Monday (October 24). The match is against Finland on Thursday (27th). Both the matches will start at 3 pm.

The top three teams from the mini-tournament will continue in the A-League, where seven tickets to the UEFA Women’s U17 EURO 2023 in Estonia (May 14-26) will be up for grabs in the spring.
