Former Duesberger Claire O’Riordan is flying to the World Cup

Duisburg / Glasgow.
Clare O’Riordan, who played for MSV Duisburg from 2018 to the summer of 2022, qualified for the World Cup with Ireland.

For Claire O’Riordan, who played for the MSV Duisburg soccer team in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga from 2018 until the end of last season, a dream came true. They qualified with the Irish national team for the World Cup for the first time with a 1-0 play-off win over Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday evening. Substitute striker Amber Barrett, who plays for Bundesliga 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, scored the winning goal. Title fights will increase in New Zealand and Australia from July 20 to August 20 next year.

Although the former Duesberger did not play in the play-off game against Scotland, she celebrated with the “girls in green”, this time playing in orange. It was an early present for the defender, who now plays for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, on her 28th birthday on Wednesday. A year ago she was in a hospital bed due to a complex fracture of her leg. In September, she made her return to the starting XI for the Irish national team in a 1–0 win in Slovakia.

Claire O’Riordan’s contract with MSV Duisburg expired in the summer. However, after a long stalemate, they parted ways and O’Riordan eventually signed with Celtic Glasgow.

Germany became group champions with confidence

The German national team with Duisburg national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg did not have to pass the play-off round. The European vice-champions have already qualified for the title fights in Australia and New Zealand after the group stage. The team conceded only one defeat (2:3 in Serbia in April), securing a 47:5 goals and 27 points win in qualifying Group H.
