The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has apologized after a video emerged of national team players singing a song with lyrics in support of the IRA. “We apologize from the bottom of our hearts”The FAI and Ireland national team coach Vera Pawe gave the assurance in a joint press release on Wednesday 12 October.
The video shows members of the national team celebrating their 1-0 win over Scotland in the dressing room at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday night. “Oh, ‘RA’ up”Equally with support for the former paramilitary group.
“We will raise the matter to remind the players of their responsibilities. I spoke to the players this morning and together we regret any pain we may have caused. There are no excuses for this.“, Vera Pav confirmed. The team sang “A hundred songs last (Tuesday) night, that’s all that came out (on the networks).”Defender Iain O’Gorman expressed his regrets on RTE radio. “We want to apologize to everyone who was hurt.”she added.
Women’s team’s first qualification for the World Cup
The incident arose during a meeting between Irish Foreign Secretary Simon Coveney and leaders of Northern Ireland’s political parties. Unionist Party leader Doug Beattie tweeted the video “A slap in the teeth to some of the (players) who have lost loved ones to the actions of the IRA and the supporters who applauded”.
I don’t know the authenticity of this clip but I have to say it is a kick in the teeth to some of their admirers and supporters who have lost loved ones at the hands of the IRA.

The IRA, which opposes British rule over the province of Northern Ireland, carried out several decades of violent activity that ended in 1998 with the so-called “Good Friday” peace agreement.
The win, for the first time in its history, allowed selection to open the doors to the next World Cup in New Zealand and Australia next year. For both men and women, Ireland have not competed in a world tournament since 2002.
