A Flemish-Dutch breakthrough in solar cells yields a record efficiency of 30.1 percent

“Achieving higher power density will create more opportunities to integrate these solar cells into construction and manufacturing components, so that more existing surfaces can be covered with PV modules. [fotovoltaïsche modules, zonnecellen]Breaking the 30 percent barrier is a big step in accelerating the energy transition and improving energy security, as it reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

According to TNO’s Professor Gianluca Colletti, a high rate of increase is possible quickly. “We know the ingredients to achieve over 30 percent efficiency. Combining the scalability expertise and knowledge we’ve gained over the past few years, we can focus on mass production of this technology with our industrial partners.” .

Furthermore, the flexible and highly transparent perovskite cells can be combined with a wide range of other silicon cells already commercialized, with efficiencies approaching 30 percent. The new tandem cell structure also makes it easy to make a bifacial tandem, a tandem that collects light from two sides. This further increases the energy yield.
