Considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, Pyramids of Giza, Egypt And, more specifically, the manufacturing process of these pharaonic creations still holds many mysteries. Now, a team of French researchers has discovered the extinct waterways The Nile River Played an important role in transporting building blocks.

Published in the journal Science Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Pnas)., the study of a previously unknown tributary of the Nile was led by researchers at the University of Avignon in France. Discovery helps To dispel the myth that these buildings are made by aliensAs the book argues Were astronauts gods?do suíço Erich von Däniken.

“Ancient Egyptian engineers explored an ancient Nile canal to transport building materials and supplies to the Giza Plateau. However, there is a paucity of environmental evidence as to when, where and how these ancient landscapes developed,” the French authors say.

When we think of the Pyramids of Giza today, we immediately imagine a vast, vast desert. At first glance, the researchers’ finding that a Nile channel ran through the area may seem absurd, responsible for helping transport the building blocks.

While the area is currently about 8 kilometers from the main body of the Nile — a considerable distance when you think about the massive amounts of stone transported — the situation was quite different 4,000 years ago, according to the new study. This is because the authors discovered the remains of a channel known as the Khufu near the Giza Plateau.

Importance of the Nile in the transportation of building blocks

“New paleoecological analyzes help reconstruct the 8,000-year history of the Nile in the region, with ancient water features and raised river basins supporting the construction of the Giza Pyramids complex around 4,500 years ago,” the authors say.

Reconstructing the history of the canal was made possible by tracking the traces of more than 60 plant species found throughout the area. Through this data, the researchers discovered that the water level in the canal was higher during the construction of the pyramids. Then, the canal opposite the Giza complex disappeared.

This discovery brings history and archeology closer to the original mechanisms that allowed Egypt’s pyramids to be built. However, other mysteries still await to be discovered, Like the process of putting giant stones together Inside the labyrinth of tunnels laid out.
