For a long time it was assumed that there was perfect silence in space. But a new sound recording by the American space agency NASA proves otherwise. The black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster, located 250 million light-years away, seems to mutter under its breath.
Acoustic waves emanating from a supermassive black hole were first detected in 2003. They are propagated by the large amount of gas at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster. However, the human ear cannot detect them. So the experts transmitted the sound using 57 and 58 octaves. They proved that the universe is not silent.

“The idea that space is soundless is that it is mostly made up of a vacuum, or air void. This prevents sound waves from propagating,” NASA explains. “However, a cluster of hundreds of galaxies has so much gas that we eventually heard the sound coming directly from the black hole.”

Sound waves are radiated radially or outward from the supermassive object. The tones are 144 quadrillion times and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequencies. Thus, our ears pick up deep and dark sounds, which each person exhibits slightly different characteristics.

The published recording reminds some of the primordial sound of the Hindu cosmos “Om”, while others compare it to tones from horror movies. Musicians on social networks suggest that the black hole plays tunes similar to those of Pink Floyd or the singer Bjork. However, more often than not, people describe a space object as its stomach growling.

The recording proves that even though the human ear can’t pick up the sound of space, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. In contrast, sound waves have an important function.

The microscopic gas and plasma moving between galaxies is denser and much hotter than the intergalactic medium. Because temperature helps control star formation and because sound waves can carry energy, they may play a critical role in the development of galaxy clusters.
