Irish Open: A first for Polish golf

Published on

Leading the Irish Open from the first round, Adrian Meronc held the lead and became the first Polish golfer to win on the European Tour. The 29-year-old carded a late 66 to fend off a thunderous comeback from New Zealander Ryan Fox, who moved from 15th to second after a 64 on Sunday. Meronc ends the tournament with 268 shots, 3 lengths ahead of Fox and 4 ahead of South African Tristan Lawrence. Peters and Thomas Detry lost out in a battle for the top positions on the Mount Juliet Estate Course in Thomastown. Peters dropped 19 places to finish 37th heading into the fourth and final round of the $6 million DP World Tour event in 19th place. After convincing days on Friday (67) and Saturday (69), Antwerp returned this time with a card of 73 (+1) on Sunday. A six-time winner on the European Circuit, he started with a double bogey on hole N.3 before suffering a fresh bogey on hole N.7. The second half of the day was better, with three birdies and a bogey, but not enough to keep his place. Finished 37th with a total of 282 shots (-6). Thomas Detry returned a final card of 70 (-2) after five birdies for two bogeys. The Brussels resident is tied for 58th, sharing 284 shots (-4).
