Argentina registers first case of suspected monkey pox in country Health

Published on

The Argentine Ministry of Health suspects that monkeypox has been reported in the country for the first time, according to a statement issued by the government on Sunday.

The ministry said in a statement that a resident of the province of Buenos Aires had been linked to health services with “monkey flu-like” symptoms.

The patient presents with small sores and fever in various parts of the body, and he returned from a trip to Spain, a country where small outbreaks of the infection had been identified.

The health statement states that the infected person is in good condition, isolated and treated for symptoms.

More cases to come

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it expects more cases to be detected as monkeypox increases surveillance in countries where it is not commonly seen.

As of Saturday, 94 cases had been confirmed and 28 smallpox cases had been reported in 15 countries, according to the UN Health Agency.

“Available data indicate that cases are being transmitted from person to person between people in close physical contact with a person,” the World Health Organization added.

What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild and found in parts of West and Central Africa.

It is spread through close contact and can be controlled relatively easily through measures such as isolation and hygiene.
