The Spanish government on Tuesday (17) approved a bill that would give women experiencing severe menopause three days without concessions.

The proposal is now being put to a vote in the parliament of the country where the socialist government has a majority. If accepted, the Spain Will be the first country in Europe to receive a license.

The move comes at the behest of the country’s equality minister, Irene Montero. As per the directive, any woman suffering from dysmenorrhea, a condition of severe menstruation, can apply for a license at any private company or public institution where she works..

“We are sending a message to the world today to support all women who are fighting for their sexual and reproductive rights. It is our duty to make sure these women decide what happens to their bodies,” Montero said.

The same project also expands access to abortion, which is already legal in the country and can now be performed up to the 14th week of pregnancy in all cases and up to the 22nd week in cases of fetal abnormalities.

Under the reform, 16- and 17-year-olds will not need their legal parents’ permission to terminate a pregnancy.

According to the new proposal, pregnant women can extend their leave from the 39th week (beyond nine months of gestation). In addition, menstrual products such as sanitary pads will be distributed free of charge in schools and health centers.

The proposal caused controversy SpainAn increasing section of the population supports more liberal measures, while another conservative group opposes spontaneous termination of pregnancy.
