In the corner, Ireland shows itself from its most beautiful part. The romantic landscape, with its lush green meadows, vast fields, and small farms seemingly lost amidst the typical Irish stone walls, reflects the essence of Ireland.

Smaller islands, peninsulas, and beautiful fishing harbors can be found along the coast, and beautiful beaches line further south. Inishbofin, the largest island off the coast of Konemara, is a day trip destination. If you have a little more time, plan a day trip to the island. Ferries run several times a day from Klegan to Inishbofin Island.

Clifden und Oughterard

Also worth a visit is the beautiful seaside town of Clifforden, the unofficial capital of the region. Numerous art and craft shops are located here, and farmers’ markets are held every Friday, selling local produce, home-made bread and vegetables. Remains of Clifforden Castle, an early nineteenth-century castle, are also worth a visit.

Driving from Galway City on N59 in the direction of Clifford, you will also pass the small town of Otterrad, also known as the “Gateway to Connemara”, about half an hour’s drive from Galway City.

Otterrad is a good base for hiking in the Konamara countryside. Large hiking trails such as the “Western Way Hiking Trail” and the “New Village Walk” start in the small town.

Roundstone, a small fishing village with a harbor, is also one of the attractions. It is home to a small residence of artisans, goldsmiths, and doll makers.

When is the best time to visit Konemara?

The best time to visit Connemara is in western Ireland, from March to September. Then this area shows the most beautiful side with light temperature and lots of sunlight.
