Five associations, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, made the announcement in a joint statement on Monday.

The decision was the result of a feasibility study of international tournaments, which, among other things, examined the economic implications, aspects of football policy, and the expected costs of the organization. EM’s orientation promises similar returns, but it says that the costs to be paid are significantly lower and the potential gains have already been realized.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced last year that Great Britain and Ireland were preparing an application for the 2030 World Cup, and that the award would be taken up in 2024. However, it was criticized for failing to qualify for the 2006 and 2018 English World Cups. The application period for EM 2028 ends on March 23. The hosts of the tournament are expected to be announced on April 5th.
