In the wake of protests by Irish fishermen, Russia has announced that it intends to move its planned naval strategy off the southwest coast of Ireland. According to Russian Ambassador Filato, the decision is a sign of “good will.”

In the wake of the violent protests in Dublin, Russia wants to move its planned naval tactics off the south-west coast of Ireland. The Russian embassy in Dublin, Yuri Filatov, said in a letter posted on Facebook that the exercises would take place outside Ireland’s exclusive economic zone. It says the goal is “not to disrupt fishing activities.” The Irish Times reported that Filatov described Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s decision as a sign of goodwill.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coweny took to Twitter to say he had received a letter from Moscow. And: “I welcome this answer.”

The fishermen wanted to prevent the maneuver

In fact, from February 3 to 8, the planned event was scheduled to take place off the southwest coast of Ireland. The Irish fishermen had earlier announced that they wanted to disrupt military exercises 240 kilometers off the coast of Cork.

Up to 60 boats are ready to fish in the area, albeit in international waters, but part of Ireland’s so-called Exclusive Economic Zone – 200 miles zone. This area is considered to be rich in fish.

Focusing on events in Ukraine

Earlier in the week, Irish Foreign Minister Coweny spoke out against Russian military exercises. Although his country could not stop the conspiracies. But he made it clear to the Russian ambassador to Ireland that they were not welcome. In light of what is happening with “Ukraine and there,” this is not the time to escalate military operations and tensions, Coweny said.

Observers saw Moscow’s latest decision as a rare relief amid mounting tensions over Russian military buildup near Ukraine.

Russia is demanding security from the West

The West fears an attack on Ukraine is possible. The Kremlin denied this and demanded security guarantees from the USA and NATO. The Coalition and the United States recently rejected in writing Russia’s key demands for rejecting Ukraine’s NATO membership and forbidding the placement of NATO weapons near the Russian border.
