Ireland: A man was arrested after a truck rammed into the gate of the Russian embassy

Published on

A man has been arrested in Dublin on Monday, March 7, for allegedly driving a truck into the gates of the Russian embassy in the Irish capital.

The incident took place at around 1.30 pm. Scenes of a large truck breaking down iron gates and driving back to the embassy gate were shared on social media.

No one was injured in the incident, but the Russian embassy in Dublin condemned the act as “criminal madness” against the “peaceful diplomatic mission”. They criticized the police’s inaction and called on the Irish authorities to take “full measures” to ensure the safety of its staff and their families.

“Someone has been arrested and (…) is currently in custody,” police later said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing.

There have been several demonstrations in Dublin in recent days in front of the Russian Embassy declaring support for Ukraine. Last Friday, one of the protesters, a Catholic priest, threw red paint on the doors of a diplomatic mission.

Moscow on Monday called for “adequate” protection for its diplomatic missions in France following reports of a Molotov cocktail attack on a cultural center in Paris.
