The Ukraine-24 TV station announced on Tuesday that power had been restored to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, adding that the authorities had informed the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that power was restored at the Chernobyl plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986.

The UN agency said in a tweet: “Ukraine has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that it has restored external power flow to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant after the line was again damaged by occupying forces.”

She added that staff have resumed steps to connect the station to the power grid.

Energy company “Ukrenergo” had previously reported that the Russian military had damaged the power line supplying food to the Chernobyl plant after the operation, which began in Ukraine on February 24 and the capture of the nuclear power plant.

Power was cut off from the plant early last week but was restored on Sunday.

The plant includes emergency diesel generators capable of supplying power needed to temporarily operate safety systems, including cooling systems for a nuclear fuel storage facility.

“Okrinergo” reported that the line broke down again before the full power supply was restored, and confirmed that one of its maintenance teams would go back to carry out additional repairs.

She added that the residents of the town of Slovakia could not leave Chernobyl “without a reliable source of energy” because they depended on Chernobyl for electricity.
