LONDON (AP) – The football associations of Great Britain and Ireland have decided not to host the 2030 World Cup, but instead want to focus on their joint application for the 2028 European Championship.

Five associations from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland made the announcement in a joint statement.

The decision is the result of a feasibility study of international tournaments, which, among other things, examined the economic implications, aspects of football policy, and the expected costs of the organization. EM’s orientation promises similar returns, but it says that the costs to be paid are significantly lower and the potential gains have already been realized.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced last year that Great Britain and Ireland were preparing an application for the 2030 World Cup, and that the award would be taken up in 2024. However, it was criticized for failing to qualify for the 2006 and 2018 English World Cups.

For the 2028 European Championships, which coincide with the 2032 finals, interested parties must register with the European Football Association (UEFA) by March 23. The umbrella organization wants to announce potential candidates in early April.
