Macron sees Britain’s credibility in jeopardy

Published on

“If you’ve been negotiating a contract for years and then working a few months later to decide on areas that are not best for you, that’s not a good sign of credibility,” Macron Financial Times »Friday said.

Paris and London have been embroiled in a bitter dispute over fishing rights since Britain withdrew from the European Union. They accuse each other of violating the Brexit trade agreement, which expired last year, in connection with a fishing license in British waters. France has accused the UK of not issuing adequate fishing permits to French vessels.

In addition, London is in dispute with Brussels over the Northern Ireland protocol to the Brexit agreement. This provides that there are no customs restrictions between Northern Ireland, part of Great Britain, and Ireland, a member of the European Union, to avoid endangering the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Instead, there should be restrictions between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However, critics believe this creates a real frontier within the UK and will suffer from supplies to Northern Ireland.
