At the request of the President of the European Parliament, David Sasoli, the Parliamentary Legal Service filed an appeal with the European Commission against the European Union for failing to apply the Cross Compliance Regulation.
The regulation, passed last December, allows the EU to suspend payments to EU budgets that threaten respect for the rule of law. However, the Commission has so far refrained from implementing it. The Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament therefore recommended legal action.
“As requested in the Parliamentary Resolutions, our Legal Services filed an appeal in court today against the European Commission for failing to apply the regulation on cross-compliance,” Sasoli said. “I hope the European Commission will continue to function and live up to what President Ursula von Der Lane said in the last plenary session. Words must be followed by deeds, ”he added.
A spokesman for the EU Commission in a daily briefing with the press assured that the EU would recover the fine (one million euros a day) imposed by the EU court on Poland. “Whenever an EU court establishes a financial sanction, the European Commission is required to recover the amount. Is paid periodically to the Member State. In addition, as a last resort, the commission spokesman added that if the state did not pay the dues, they would be “compensated” by the equivalent non-payments due to the EU member state.
