The Irish Data Protection Authority fined the DPC a record 22 225 million for lack of transparency. The Facebook affiliate wants to appeal.

DIrish privacy advocates impose record fine on WhatsApp Messenger service Due to the lack of transparency in the transfer of personal data, the Facebook subsidiary had to pay 225 million euros, the Data Protection Authority ruled by the DPC on Thursday, which has never imposed such a large fine. Meanwhile, the DPC issued an edict and demanded some action from the US group. WhatsApp described the sentence as “completely inappropriate” and announced that it would appeal.

Since Facebook’s European headquarters in Dublin, DPC is responsible for data protection issues. The latest text is an inquiry into data disclosure launched in 2018. In the past, the authorities have been repeatedly criticized by other European supervisory authorities for taking too long to make decisions. In July, the European Supervisory Authority EDPB intervened and asked the DPC to plan WhatsApp fines first.
