Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz resigns

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz resigns He has been under a lot of pressure in recent days due to a corruption probe involving him. Kurs, a 35-year-old leader of the People’s Party (center-right), has suggested that his position should now be taken over by Foreign Minister Alexander Shalenberg.

The Austrian Attorney General announced on Wednesday that Kurz’s involvement in the corruption investigation was announced on Wednesday, but the People’s Party defended its leader. However, that is not enough. On Friday, Greens, part of the ruling coalition, said Kurs should not continue as chancellor; Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections next Tuesday.

Along with Kurs, nine other people are under investigation. They have all been accused of illegally manipulating funds from the Ministry of Finance between 2016 and 2018 to manipulate votes in favor of Kurs and his party and to publish favorable news in the Austrian press (Kurs was foreign minister at the time).

Kurz was the second-time Austrian chancellor: the first began in December 2017 and ended in May 2019, and the second began in January 2020.
