HBO Max explains its release in Europe, Belgium now forgotten

Published on

Warner Media has released more information about the European release of its HBO Max streaming platform. The service will arrive in Spain and Scandinavia later this year. By 2022, more Central and Eastern European countries will follow. For now, there is no question of a launch in Belgium.

By the end of 2020, HBO announces the arrival of the HBO Max In Europe in 2021. However, this announcement came a little prematurely, because in July of this year, Warnermedia had to rectify the situation: the European release was postponed until further notice. At the time, the streaming service was launched in Central and South America, initially wanting to focus on those areas of the world.

Spain and Scandinavia

After that, news of the HBO Max release in Europe is expected. Christina Zulebach, Managing Director of HBO Max Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA), and Priya Dogra, President of Warner Media EMEA, spoke at the Series Mania TV Festival in Lille, France.

Later this year, HBO Max will be available in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) and Spain. In 2022 it will be followed by 15 other European countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Croatia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Czech Republic.

Streams

Belgium has not yet been included in these plans. The cause of this condition is not difficult to find. HBO has concluded a deal with Telenet (Streams) in Flanders and BTV in the French – speaking country. For the same reason, there are no plans yet to launch the HBO Max in major European markets such as the UK, Germany and Italy. In this country, HBO still has a special agreement with Sky until 2025, which also applies to Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Ireland. In the Netherlands, HBO is part of Ziggo, a pay channel in France of Canal +.

The new streaming giant has not discussed its offer in detail with these large groups. Netflix, Disney +, Apple + and other Amazon will therefore not face direct competition from HBO Max in these countries.
