Ireland pays equal pay for men and women on top teams

Published on

The Irish Federation announced on Monday that players and women on the Irish national team will receive the same salary.

“The Irish Football Association is proud to announce that players representing the leading national men’s and women’s teams in the Republic of Ireland will soon receive the same per-game bonus in international competitions as part of a revolutionary agreement in the Irish sport.” The Federation celebrated in the statement.

To reach this agreement, the men’s team agreed to reduce the number of players per game, so the federation allows this amount to increase players ’salaries.

England, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand are some of the countries that are committed to equalizing the remuneration of their national team players.

“This is a great day for Irish football,” said Irish women’s team captain Katie McCabe.

“We have taken a big step forward in this deal, offering international players similar opportunities and showing the world what can be achieved through the union,” he said.

Everton defender Seamus Coleman (59 games for Irish national team) explained that the Irish players were happy to contribute to the deal.

The federation said equal pay would be established from international competitions in September and qualifying bonuses for tournaments would be governed by this principle.
