Over the next thirty years, four urban areas in Sardinia will lose a significant percentage of their population: Carbonia-Iglesias (-25.5%), Medio Campidano (-24.6%), Oristano (-23.2%) and Neuro (-22.3%).

This percentage is highest in Italy.

Eurostat announced this with demographic projections for the period 2019-2050.

Unlike other countries on the old continent, Italy ranks fifth in the European Union in terms of urban demographic decline; The most serious case has been registered in Sardinia.

Italian urban areas will lose an average of 3.1%. Positive numbers are expected in Bolzano (+ 21.5%), Verona (+ 12.1%), Parma (+ 10%), Modena (+ 9%) and Bologna (+ 8.7%).

Overall, the European Statistical Institute indicates that three out of five urban areas will see their population increase. A trend affecting 15 of the 27 European countries.

Malta (35.4%), Ireland (29.2%) and Sweden (25.1%) were the biggest gainers. Latvia (-17.7%), Greece (-16.7%) and Poland (-10.3%).

The opposite is true for rural residents, which is reduced to four in five cases and one in twenty member states.
