The Irish government has ordered a fine and up to six months in prison for participating in public services. Churches across the country, formed by a large Catholic majority, have been closed since December 26, 2020. The Minister of Health has taken this step by signing a law known as the Legal Instrument and in practice public worship is a crime. The case is to be considered by the Irish Supreme Court, which will decide whether it is constitutional.

A Catholic archbishop has defined the Ministry of Health’s initiative as a “breach of trust,” establishing in practice “educated persecution.” Ireland is 90% Christian, 84% Catholic, 2.8% Anglican and 1% Orthodox. 1.4% of the population are Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Pentecostals.
