The English national team plays consistently, but very rarely. For many years, the team from the homeland of football was even able to shoot penalties.
LONDON – The English national team’s only big trophy was a few days ago, but Germany will never forget it. German and English fans can still argue about the “Wembley goal” that led to the 1966 World Cup victory.
English national team: Three lions from Wembley
England like to call itself the homeland of football. In fact, England’s national team is the oldest national team in the world, along with neighboring Scotland. In 1872 the two played their first international match. As in rugby and hockey, football has separate teams for the four divisions of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Also known as the Three Lions, derived from the English coat of arms with three golden lions. The song “Three Lions”, released in 1996 for the European Football Championship in his home country, became the anthem of the English national team. The most important stadium for the English was the legendary Wembley Stadium in London, which was completely rebuilt in 2007.
England national team: victories and records
The English national team could not shine internationally. From 1884 to 1984 they held the British Home Championship against Scotland, Wales and Ireland (1950 to Northern Ireland), with England winning 54 times.
His greatest achievement was winning the 1966 World Cup in his home country. Geoff Hurst’s controversial goal to make it 3-2 in the 101st minute was reduced to a “Wembley goal” in football history. Until the 1990s, a team from the University of Oxford concluded that the ball was not really in the goal.
The semi-finals in 1990 and 2018 were the most successful at the World Championships, however, and ended, however, with a loss in the race for third place. England finished third only once in the European Championship: a victory over the then Soviet Union in Italy in 1968. The English national team has received a lot of ridicule for consistently losing penalties in major tournaments.
England national team: International match record
The English national team’s international match record after 1,010 matches is very positive: the Three Lions have celebrated a total of 576 wins, 192 defeats and 242 draws.
The English were at enmity with the German national team, and the tabloids were not fueled. The international match record is balanced: both teams have won 13 times each. There are six draws.
England national team: current players and coaches
Coach Roy Hodgson has resigned after being left out of the English national team for the 2016 European Football Championship. He was replaced by former international Gareth Southgate. It easily qualified for EM 2021. Current Squad:
