Ice hair? The strange phenomenon of trees is attracting attention on the internet

Published on

During a severe winter in the counties of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, in addition to Mullagmore in Slag County, among the other forests of the country, many people found it strange to see a phenomenon as beautiful: hundreds of strands of “hair” connected with very delicate silver (native photos).

The so-called “ice hair” melts as soon as it is touched by human hands or the winter sun. Several pictures have been posted on social networks showing logical “cotton candy” attached to the ground as logs or trees.

But what are ice hairs?

Scientists say the phenomenon is caused by crystals forming in rotten wood when temperatures drop below zero degrees due to winter nights.

Several types of fungi with a diameter of 0.01 mm allow the formation of ice-thin threads.

As of 2015, only six regions in the United States, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Canada and Russia have reported angel hair or snow flowers.
