The Security Council includes India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Kenya

India, Mexico, Norway, Ireland and Kenya, which were elected by the UN General Assembly in June, formally joined the Security Council on Monday, promoting world peace and security amid increasing body responsibility.

The five countries, which attended the first meeting of the Council in January with the aim of approving a work program produced by President Tunisia, will remain non-permanent members for two years.

The Security Council has 15 members, including five permanent members with veto rights (United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom), and ten non-permanent members, which are renewed halfway each year.

The new members won in Germany, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia and South Africa. In 2021, the influence of the European Union Security Council will be reduced to two members (Norway is not part of the European Union and the United Kingdom has won the Brexit).

Diplomats argue that London should continue to share the same values as those of the European Union, both on the British side and on EU members attending the Council, so that the situation does not change on major international issues. .

In practice, the EU needs to increase its staff in the UN to attend meetings that it can represent so far, and demonstrate music and coordination efforts on both sides. We will have to show a united front.

The rift in the Security Council, which has been badly affected by Donald Trump’s unilateralism, has intensified in recent years. According to the Special Media Scheduled Caste Procedures, the use of veto was in ten bars in the 1990s and 2000s, but it was used 31 times between 2010 and 2019 and 5 times in 2020.

The Security Council is tasked with dealing with a number of conflicts and crises, particularly mobilizing more than one million peacekeepers through fifteen peace operations around the world.
