Kovid -19 figures increased – 764 new cases – Leading Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan, to ask citizens if they need to “sacrifice” to stay away from elderly loved ones to save lives this Christmas.

More of our people died in connection with Kovid-19, bringing the death toll to 2,158.

The number of cases has risen in recent days, including four new deaths today. Holohan posed a moral question to the nation.

“If you’ve been socializing for the past few weeks or this weekend, consider your Christmas plans carefully,” he said.

“If your contacts have not been reduced, is it your responsibility to meet with your family over the age of 65 this weekend?

“Cancel your plans? We have real hope on the horizon of Kovid-19 vaccines.

“Make sure you are alive to receive your loved ones, and stay away from them if your movements are not limited at this point.

“Apparently, staying away from an elderly family this Christmas will save them – and it will be an extraordinary sacrifice for the common good.”

Dr. Holohan added: “All indicators of disease severity are moving in the wrong direction, faster than we expected.

We have particularly strong concerns about interconnectedness throughout the festive season.

He explained that by December 11, the seven-day incidence rate for people between the ages of 19 and 44 was 106 per 100,000 population.

By Saturday, the rate had doubled to 217 per lakh.

“If these young people are in contact with their loved ones over the age of 65, we can see an increase in infections in this more vulnerable group,” he said. Holohan‌ said.
