Japan strikes hundreds of miles in meteor showers, astonishes people

In some parts of western and central Japan, a fireball falling from the night sky ignited social media, with users sharing pictures of an unusually bright shooting star.

According to a report on NDTV, local media said on Sunday that the fireball was believed to be a bolide – a very bright meteor exploding in the atmosphere.

“We believe the last eruption of light is as bright as the full moon,” Takeshi Ino, director of the Akashi Municipal Planetarium, told the Kyodo news agency.

In a video tweeted by a Japanese public broadcaster, the sky is shining in Japan, including the cities of Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Shizuka and Okayama.

Fireball was visible for a few seconds on Sunday morning, but it was captured on cameras owned by national broadcaster NHK – which captures more seismic activity than alien light shows.

News agency Reuters also posted a dashcom video featuring the rare phenomenon.

A similarly bright shooting star was discovered in Tokyo in July and later identified as a meteorite, fragments of which were found in neighboring Chiba Prefecture.
